Films Upstairs:
Lay down your hearts Hukwe travelled the World Music circuit extensively for 20 years in Europe,
America and Japan, where he became something of a celebrity. After supporting Peter Gabriel on his 'Growing Up' tour of North America, Hukwe died suddenly in December 2003 and his large family was left divided and unable to support itself.
However, few knew that Hukwe had 7 wives and over 40 children - all of whom are musicians. This film traces the issues confronting this fundamentally tribal family who, despite falling into the sophisticated world of glossy albums and lucrative world tours, face the perils of daily survival in Tanzania but yet retain the musical legacy left to them by the master musician that was 'Doctor' Hukwe Zawose.

Music Downstairs:
10-11pm Live performance from The Zawose family
www.realworldrecords.com/zawose
From early morning and late into the hot and sultry nights, not one minute passes without thumb pianos being plucked away or groups of children breaking out into chorus. The younger Zawoses have grown into the musical void left after Hukwe's death - Hukwe's brother and younger son are hitting the shrill falsetto notes that makes Zawose music so memorable. Women play the thumb pianos in concert, something never before allowed under Hukwe's more conservative rule. There is a new energy in the family learning from the bad times and building for a better future for the whole family and its music - a music that will never be lost.
